A local family says an Atlanta man is in critical condition in Chile and is too sick to come home after taking a cruise on a brand new ship. His family said he got sick on board along with a lot of other people, but the cruise line tells a different story.
Carnival Cruise Line representatives said they didn’t know anything about numerous illnesses on board the "Splendor" voyage. But one local family said their father got so sick on board he’s now in ICU in Santiago, Chile.
“Word is that it was a boat with a lot of illness upon it,” said Donna Fessenden.
Fessenden said the dream cruise her parents just finished was anything but. She said her father contracted a respiratory illness on board Carnival Cruise Line’s new ship, Splendor, on a month-long trip to three South American ports. Her parents said dozens of other passengers got sick too.
“The infirmary was very crowded, sadly, many, many people were ill with what appears to be a respiratory infection,” said Fessenden.
In an e-mail response to Channel 2 Action News reporter Amanda Rosseter's questions, Carnival said it is, "Not aware of any reports of pneumonia or higher than average instances of illness during this voyage."
The cruise line said Fessenden's father was treated for "routine minor illness, improved, and requested no further assistance."
Fessenden said her father got worse and went into renal failure. He is listed in critical condition in Santiago, Chile and cannot travel home, she said.
Fessenden wants the cruise line to help with the thousands of dollars in out of pocket expenses for her mother while she stays in Chile.
So far, the family said Carnival has only offered advice.
“We just wanted them to do the right thing and help my mother through this stressful time,” said Fessenden.
She also wants the new ship disinfected and other passengers notified.
“I don’t want anyone else to end up in this situation -- literally stranded in a foreign land. My father is not able to board an airplane and come home and we’re hoping, at this point, that he survives,” said Fessenden.
Channel 2 Action News reporter Amanda Rosseter spoke with Carnival Cruise Line several times Wednesday and they said they didn't know Fessenden's father was in the hospital because he was OK when he left the ship.
Right now, the Fessendens just want help.
