Windstar Cruises, which operates a three-ship fleet of luxury yachts that explore the hidden harbors and secluded coves of the world’s most treasured destinations, has launched two new evening dining experiences for guests aboard Wind Surf.
Romance is under sail as guest enjoy water views, exquisite sunsets and stars while dining alfresco on five-star cuisine in Le Marché or Candles. Le Marché is a seafood bar on Wind Surf’s Star Deck offering a delectable array of fish and shellfish. Candles is a poolside grill on Wind Surf’s Main Deck offering fine steaks and skewers.
“Wind Surf guests now have the option of dining in one of four diverse evening venues,” said Diane Moore, President of Windstar Cruises. “We look forward in continuing to evolve our guest experience by offering more choice and value.”
In Le Marché, La Fantasie is the first course and includes scallops ceviche, salmon tartar, tuna sashimi and shrimp cocktail. The second course is Le Bisque d’Homard—a delicious lobster soup with condiments of fresh lobster bits, cream and armagnac. A fresh Greek salad is next on the menu. For the main course, guests may choose between Le Plateau de Fruits de Mer, a shareable tower featuring lobster tail, clams, mussels, shrimp and langoustines, or a warm Seafood Dish of lobster tail, clams, mussels, shrimp and langoustines. Guests finish with a final course of Les Fromages, a delicious selection of Reblochon, Boursin, Roquefort and Camembert cheeses, or Les Gourmandises, a selection of four desserts for lovers of sweets.
At Candles, guests start with insalate caprese, followed by a main course selection of tender rib eye, New York steaks, fresh Swordfish skewers or assorted vegetable skewers all grilled to perfection. The course is served with a choice of sauces: black peppercorn, creamy mushroom, Café de Paris butter or red wine sauce. At the end of the evening, guests savor delicious Tiramisu made of savoiardi dipped in coffee and mascarpone cream.
Each new venue accommodates approximately 30 guests per night and is subject to weather conditions. While there is no additional charge, reservations are recommended.
A leader in defining the small ship luxury cruise experience for more than 20 years, Windstar has won the allegiance of a new generation of contemporary travelers who appreciate the line’s luxurious accommodations, alternative dining venues, diversity of shore excursions, complimentary water sports program and deluxe spa facilities. The completed multi-million dollar Degrees of Difference enhancements on all three ships focused on structural and technical operations along with upgrades to guest areas, remodeled bathrooms in staterooms and an expanded beauty salon and spa. Other enhancements include Bose SoundDock speakers for Apple iPod Nanos, wireless Internet, flat screen televisions, luxury linens and mattresses as well as L’Occitane amenities.
Windstar’s award-wining reputation for sophisticated, yet casual elegance has been recognized by some of the most notable names in the travel world. Star Princess set sail this weekend after a three-week drydock that dramatically transformed several spaces onboard, including turning the ship's atrium into a vibrant street café-like piazza, adding the company's signature adults-only retreat called The Sanctuary, and installing a 300-square-foot Movies Under the Stars poolside screen.
These features, which have been enthusiastically enjoyed by passengers on Princess Cruises' newest vessels, have inspired an expansion to other ships in the fleet, and Star Princess is the first to be revitalized with these favorite elements.
Star Princess' updated piazza-style atrium will now feature an array of dining and entertainment opportunities including the specialty coffees, freshly baked goods, paninis, salads and tapas of the International Café. It will also introduce an expanded Vines wine bar concept, which will feature more than 30 wines by the glass, a selection of artisan meats and cheeses, plus a wine shop where passengers can purchase their favorite bottle.
On the top deck of the ship, passengers can now relax in the tranquil environment of The Sanctuary, Princess' signature adults-only retreat featuring plush padded lounge chairs and the services of dedicated Serenity Stewards. Along with enjoying refreshing beverages and light snacks, visitors to this exclusive space can also receive a massage in one of two private cabanas.
Princess' trademark Times Square-style Movies Under the Stars poolside screen is now in place and will show a variety of films, concerts and special events daily. And in the evenings it becomes an outdoor theater with specially covered lounge chairs and cozy blankets, where moviegoers can enjoy free popcorn, plus other snacks and beverages.
Additional changes made during the drydock include a new Internet Café and library area, enhancements to the onboard boutiques, the addition of LCD flat screen televisions in all staterooms, and a variety of other cosmetic updates.
Star Princess is the first of three ships to receive these updates. Caribbean Princess and Golden Princess will also receive similar transformations in subsequent drydocks, in January and April of 2009, respectively. Caribbean Princess and Golden Princess will also receive additional enhancements including a new Crown Grill steak and seafood restaurant, a new casino area and six additional suites.

The Pinnacle Grill, the exclusive, reservations-only dining venue on all Holland America Line ships, debuts a tantalizing new menu this fall. Created by Master Chef Rudi Sodamin and introduced with rave reviews on ms Eurodam earlier this summer, the expanded menu introduces new Pacific Northwest specialty entrees and adds creations ranging from lobster "mac & cheese" to Colorado lamb chops.
Delectable seafood dishes include broiled, troll-caught salmon, broiled or poached lobster tail, cedar-planked black cod with shrimp scampi and the Master Chef's interpretation of surf-and-turf: filet mignon and jumbo prawns on whipped potatoes with garlic rosemary beurre blanc.
Selected cuts of prime hand-selected beef continue to highlight the Pinnacle's menu in innovative preparations and presentation. Guests can select from five prime cuts of steak rubbed with special Holland America Culinary Collection seasoning, grilled and served with hand-crafted sauces such as Master Chef's green peppercorn classic hollandaise. They can also opt for the time-honored classic of Filet Steak Diane, a grilled veal chop marinated overnight in a savory blend of rosemary, garlic and pepper vinegar with scallions, or oven-baked chicken breast stuffed with spinach and garlic herb cheese.
"Master Chef Sodamin has designed this new menu to offer our guests a wider range of dishes and flavors," said Richard D. Meadows, CTC, executive vice president, marketing, sales and guest programs. "The restaurant is such a popular spot that we want to keep it fresh with much variety and allow guests to dine several nights a cruise as many like to do. The menu continues to highlight Holland America's Pacific Northwest roots while adding innovative accents to heighten the Pinnacle Grill dining experience."
Intriguing appetizers include the Pinnacle Ocean Platter - carpaccio of lightly smoked salmon, hot smoked salmon, sea scallops and wasabi cream - and Dungeness crab cakes with spiral shaved cucumber and sweet chili-mustard sauce. French onion soup King Louis XV, lobster bisque, jumbo shrimp cocktail, vine-ripened beefsteak tomato salad, baby arugula salad and Caesar salad prepared tableside are also offered.
Dazzling desserts featuring Pacific Northwest ingredients include warm Grand Marnier Chocolate Volcano Cake, chocolate or vanilla velvet soufflé creamy homemade raspberry cheesecake and Not-so-Classic Baked Alaska. Chocolate and raisin bread pudding, créme brulee, fresh seasonal fruits and berries and a variety of ice creams, sorbets and international cheeses complete the dessert menu.
The Pinnacle Grill's wine list features an extensive selection of premium Pacific Northwest wines, French champagnes, port and dessert wines. It also offers Wine Flights, which let guests sample four selected wines during their meal. A Harvest White Sangria featuring Northwest apples, cherries, peaches and lemons in Sauvignon Blanc wine is another new addition.

Featuring distinctive Bvlgari china, Frette linens and elegant Riedel stemware, the Pinnacle Grill is ideal for a romantic dinner for two or elegant dining for a group celebration. Cunard Queen Elizabeth 2 Bids Farewell to America
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Wednesday, October 08, 2008 - 12:46 PM
cruise-news
|
On Thursday, October 16, Cunard's Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) will bid farewell to America during a celebratory call befitting of the company's longest-serving ocean liner. The historic occasion will mark the iconic ship's 706th and final call to New York. Escorted by FDNY fireboats and flotilla of pleasure craft, the beloved QE2 will depart the Westside Terminal at 5 p.m. to meet her sister ship, Queen Mary 2, for a Cunard Royal Rendezvous at the Statue of Liberty as both renowned ocean liners embark on a tandem voyage to Southampton, England - marking QE2's 806th and final Transatlantic Crossing.
Recognised as the most famous ship in the world and for 35 years, flagship of the Cunard fleet, QE2 was named by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1967. During nearly four decades at sea, she has logged 5.9 million nautical miles (equivalent to traveling to the moon and back 13 times), carried more than 2.5 million passengers and has sailed 25 World Cruises. With a top speed of 32.5 knots, QE2 is the fastest passenger ship in the world. As a true ocean liner she can sail backwards faster than most cruise ships sail forward. Her service, however, has not only been one of romanticized ports and luxury ocean travel. In 1982, she was requisitioned by the British government for military service in the Falkland Islands and thus joined the ranks of such great Cunarders as Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth who were also called upon to serve in times of conflict.
"It is most fitting that QE2's farewell to America be celebrated in New York, the city Cunard has called our North America homeport since 1847. She will always be remembered as the best loved ship in the world and we are delighted that she will be cherished by future generations of travelers at her new home in Dubai," said Carol Marlow, president of Cunard Line. "Her mantle as flagship of the British merchant fleet has proudly been bestowed upon Queen Mary 2, a ship recognised as the grandest ocean liner ever built and surely destined to continue Cunard's legacy," Marlow added.
During her arrival in the early morning of October 16, QE2 will fly a traditional Paying-Off Pennant, a maritime flag signifying the ship's length of service to the fleet. The pennant will be presented as a commemorative gift to a local dignitary during a reception onboard the ship.
Thousands of well-wishers are expected to gather at ideal New York harbour viewing locations including:
* Battery Park: On the southern shoreline of Manhattan, www.thebattery.org. Map link: http://www.bpcparks.org/bpcp/map/map.php
* Robert F. Wagner Jr. Park: Overlooking the Hudson River with great views of the Statue of Liberty. Getting there: Just south of the Museum of Jewish Heritage. By subway: 4 or 5 to Bowling Green, or N or R to Whitehall.
* The Esplanade: Running the entire length of Battery Park City, along the Hudson River from Stuyvesant High School on the north end all the way south to Battery Park.
* Hudson River Park: 550 acre park extends for five miles along the Manhattan shoreline from Battery Place to West 59th Street.
To celebrate this historic occasion, a pipe and drum corps will perform in Battery Park as a fitting salute and final "Bon Voyage" to Queen Elizabeth 2.
QE2 completes service to Cunard in November after sailing a final voyage to Dubai where she will be refurbished and become a luxury hotel, entertainment destination and maritime museum.

As Golden Princess begins a new season of sailings to the Hawaiian Islands, Princess Cruises passengers will find themselves immersed in all things Hawai'i, with the culture, traditions, arts and tastes of the island paradise highlighted throughout their cruise.
Whether they're attending demonstrations by local artisans, learning to play the ukulele, exploring historic attractions, or savoring regional cuisine in the dining room, the ship's Hawai'i travelers will enjoy the aloha spirit each day.
"Our goal is to captivate our passengers with onboard experiences that capture the heart and soul of Hawai'i," said Jan Swartz, Princess' senior vice president. "We want to make sure that our guests go home with a deeper understanding of the islands and the people who live there."
This year, Princess' Hawaiian programs are engaging passengers with a variety of cultural presentations and demonstrations, interpretive lectures, folkloric performances, hands-on activities, Hawaiian cuisine, and a number of new Adventures Ashore excursion options throughout the islands. Among these Hawaiian experiences are:
In-Port Guest Artists -- A variety of local artisans and performers will come aboard during select island port calls. Passengers will observe the unique expertise needed to create these truly Hawaiian arts, and may learn some craft skills themselves.
Kaua'i: Ni'ihau Shell Artists -- The "forbidden" island of Ni'ihau is privately owned and largely closed to the rest of the world. Although outsiders generally cannot visit there, Princess passengers have the unique opportunity to share in the island's traditional culture when some of Ni'ihau's skilled artisans come onboard for a special shell lei making demonstration. Following an ancient art form, the native Hawaiian lei makers use tiny and delicate shells found only on the northern coast of Ni'ihau, creating pieces that are highly prized as fine jewelry. In a presentation exclusive to Princess, passengers are invited to meet the artists and watch as they demonstrate the intricate process and share history of the craft. Although these heirloom-quality pieces are not widely available in stores, those who wish to own one of these stunning lei will also have the opportunity to purchase them from the craftswomen while they are onboard in Kaua'i.
Hilo: Selected Artisans -- In another presentation unique to Princess, native bone carver Dean Kaahanui comes aboard during some Big Island calls to present a workshop on the history of his craft and demonstrate the art of bone carving. During the workshop, he'll also explain the inspiration for his work, which is often based on Hawaiian legends. After the demonstration, passengers also have an opportunity to purchase some of Kaahanui's fine carvings. In Hilo, passengers may also have the opportunity to meet feather lei makers who will teach the ancient art of hulu lei.
Honolulu: Hula Show -- Keiki (children) from the award-winning Hâlau Hula Olana, one of the islands' most respected hula schools, perform onboard during Honolulu calls. These charming young dancers present an entertaining show that highlights the children's commitment to learning their hâlau's (school's) unique hula tradition that has been passed down from generations of kumu (teachers), Hawaiian language and the stories of Hawai'i.
Naturalists and Lecturers -- Passengers can also add to their knowledge and appreciation of the islands through a series of special presentations from guest lecturers and naturalists -- many from prestigious organizations such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Park Service. These experts will provide insight on the wonders of the islands, including marine biology, whale migration, volcanoes, the islands' unusual endemic species, Hawaiian culture and history, and local myths and legends.
Regional Hawaiian Cuisine -- Hawai'i's bountiful fare -- including fresh fruits such as pineapples and mangos, unique fish and seafood, luau staples such as roast pig, and treats like coconut and macadamia nuts -- star in Princess' special Hawaiian regional cuisine selections. Princess chefs use the state's abundance of unique flavors to serve up such dishes as Macadamia and Panko Crusted Mahimahi, Lehua Honey BBQ Pork Spareribs, and Luau Pork with Apricot Drippings. A festive Hawaiian Island Night celebration will also feature a full buffet feast loaded with a rich variety of local taste treats, including pupus, a fresh fruit carving station and tropical-themed desserts.
New Adventures Ashore -- Several new shore excursion options debut this season, adding some enticing island activities to Princess' line-up of nearly 100 Hawai'i tour choices. For those who want to indulge in island flavors, A Gourmet Tour of Volcanoes National Park (Hilo) offers the opportunity to not only enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, but also visit a local coffee mill, winery and artisanal candy company -- the latter for tastings of fresh macadamia cookies. In Honolulu, passengers can enjoy the romantic Ali'i Dinner Cruise, a sunset sailing on the world's largest Polynesian catamaran. In addition, Honolulu visitors can choose a new way to see Pearl Harbor with the Mighty Mo and Pacific Aviation Museum tour -- featuring the battleship USS Missouri, where Japan surrendered to end World War II. On Maui, passengers can enjoy one of the state's best snorkeling sites with the Molokini Crater Snorkel Adventure & SNUBA tour.
On Kaua'i, the new Grove Farm and Kauai Plantation Railway tour lets passengers discover the history of the Garden Isle with visits to Grove Farm, a beautifully preserved homestead and sugar plantation, plus ride the narrow gauge railway at Kilohana Plantation through fields of sugar cane, bananas, pineapples, papaya and coffee. Also on Kaua'i, passengers can explore an area usually inaccessible to the public with the Historic Haraguchi Rice Mill and Hanalei Taro Fields tour -- featuring Hawaii's only remaining rice mill and surrounding taro fields. Kaua'i visitors can also enjoy visits to the historic Kilauea Lighthouse and Limahuli Botanical Garden, a lush 17-acre garden complex set in a scenic 900-acre botanical preserve. Finally, passengers can opt for the Ultimate Island Adventure by Private Vehicle, where they can choose to explore Kaua'i's north or south shore in the comfort of their own VIP luxury vehicle.
Passenger Activities -- For passengers who want to immerse themselves further in Hawaiian culture, onboard instructors teach a number of classes throughout the cruise, including the opportunity to learn such local skills as orchid lei making, hula dancing (both traditional and contemporary), sarong tying, Hawaiian language and ukulele playing. Ukulele aficionados can even show off their new skills at the end of the cruise with a passenger talent show.
The Islands on Film and TV -- The ship's movie and television programs will also put passengers in the island mood with Hawaiian topics and stories. Princess partnered with the National Park Service to produce an exclusive video presentation on Hawaii Volcanoes National Park that gives passengers a comprehensive preview of this spectacular attraction. Hawaiian-themed films have been added to the ships' selection of recent Hollywood movies, with classics such as "From Here to Eternity" and documentaries such as "Riding Giants," profiling the world's top surfers. In addition, a selection of travel videos and documentaries give passengers a feel for the islands. Among them are a series of National Geographic presentations covering the islands' unique species, Pearl Harbor and Hawaiian culture, as well as a variety of specials on local-interest topics.
For the 2008-09 season, Golden Princess sails to the Hawaiian Islands on 14 departures. The ship offers 14-day round-trip Hawai'i cruises from Los Angeles that include calls at Hilo, Honolulu, Kaua'i (Nâwiliwili), Maui and Ensenada. The ship sails between October 1, 2008 and April 1, 2009.

Holland America Launches Explorations Team
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Friday, October 03, 2008 - 02:50 PM

|
With today's traveler looking for more enriching experiences and activities, Holland America Line has broadened its onboard programming with the new Explorations Team. As part of the premium line's ongoing Signature of Excellence initiative, the Explorations Team will be comprised of event staff with specific, niche expertise ranging from technology to travel who will offer guests a menu of "edutainment" programs.
The Holland America Line Explorations Team will be a cohesive team dedicated to enhancing the overall cruise experience and includes an onboard party planner, a travel guide, a "techspert" and dance directors. On cruises lasting 12-days or more, a book club leader will also join the team.
"People learn through experience and our guests are looking for programs, events and activities they can personally connect with," said Richard D. Meadows, CTC, executive vice president, marketing, sales and guest programs. "Our goal is not only to entertain guests but to offer them the opportunity to learn a new skill or discover something about a new port or country; the choice is theirs, and the Explorations Team is in place to facilitate that choice."
The onboard party planner will schedule, implement and host events in the Culinary Arts Center, significantly expanding the innovative program which already brings more than 70 culinary experts on board each year for cooking demonstrations and seminars. The line has invested more than $14 million in the professional show kitchens found on each ship and will use the space for more activities such as wine tasting, craft classes, floral arranging, and table and lifestyle presentations such as creating the line's beloved towel animals.
The travel guide will host lectures and be a one-stop source for information on the various ports of call. A destination expert, the travel guide will be available throughout the cruise to interact with guests on a one-on-one basis, answer questions, and give presentations on the destination's history, culture and geography. On Grand Voyages and on ms Prinsendam, rotating guest speakers fill the role of travel guide.
The "techspert" will be on hand to teach guests how to take advantage of technology, whether helping guests make the most of their vacation photos, arranging a digital scrapbook, blogging, creating a slideshow or editing a movie. Classes and personal workshops will be available throughout the cruise. Novices can learn about web 2.0 and how to work with digital photos. Those with more experience will enjoy the opportunity to learn new shortcuts and techniques.
Dance directors show guests how to dance the night away. Classes are available throughout each cruise. Whether teaching line dancing in the Crow's Nest or ballroom dancing in the Ocean Bar, the dance instructors will ensure guests of all experience levels enjoy themselves while learning new steps. After class, guests will find dance events on the ship's activity schedule where they may show off their new moves.
On cruises lasting 12 or more days, a book club leader will host lively book discussions in the Explorations Café powered by the New York Times. Book titles will be posted online before the cruise so guests interested in joining the discussion will have time to read the chosen book. The book club leader will plan and facilitate two to three discussions for each book. Books chosen will relate to the sailing destination whether by author or topic. For example, on an Australian itinerary the book may be "In a Sunburned Country" by Bill Bryson or in Asia, 'Saving Fish from Drowning: A Novel by Amy Tan."
With the addition of this new team of experts, Holland America Line guests now will have even more memories to take home from their cruise plus the personal experiences that have enriched their lives to share with family and friends. The Holland America Line Explorations Team will be implemented fleet-wide.
This $200-million phase in the Signature of Excellence commitment brings the latest innovations at sea to Holland America Line's ms Statendam, ms Maasdam, ms Ryndam, ms Veendam and ms Rotterdam. The first of the extensive dry-dock periods begins with the Veendam in spring 2009 and the last will be completed on the Maasdam in late 2010. While in dry-dock, ships will expand the aft deck to create a new resort pool concept, The Retreat, and create a new bar concept called Mix that features separate areas - Martinis, Champagne and Spirits & Ales. Enhancements will be made to all existing staterooms and additional staterooms will be added to the ships. The ships will also introduce 46 innovative lanai staterooms with direct access to the Lower Promenade Deck. New spa staterooms near the Greenhouse Spa and Salon will offer special in-room spa amenities. Overall Holland America Line has committed $525 million to its Signature of Excellence program that redefines premium cruising.

NCL Featured On ABC'S "Opportunity Knocks"
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 - 01:56 PM
cruise-news
|
Norwegian Cruise Line ("NCL") helps make family dreams come true tonight on ABC's new primetime game show, "Opportunity Knocks," which airs at 8 pm EST (7 pm CT). One California family of five will have the opportunity to win a seven-day cruise to the Mexican Riviera aboard one of NCL's Freestyle Cruising ships, Norwegian Star, as part of the game shows "dream-of-a-lifetime" prize package.
In "Opportunity Knocks," host and executive producer JD Roth knocks on a family's front door in "Anywhere, America," giving them the opportunity to have a family game night where they can win hundreds of thousands of dollars and amazing prizes that could change their lives. Each week, the mobile "Opportunity Knocks" team literally sets up shop on a family's front lawn, where an audience made up of neighbors and friends cheers them on.
In tonight's episode, the Laut family from Lakewood, California that includes parents Don and Rebecca, along with their three children: Aaron, 12; Cody, 10; and Megan, 8; are asked trivia questions based directly on their lives, each other and articles in and around their home. Highlights include mother Rebecca identifying which umpires she is known to heckle at Aaron's Pony League games; Megan is asked if she can remember her brother's slogan from his run for student body president; and Aaron tries to remember the score of a big televised football game that caused his father, Don, to run out into the street whooping and hollering - while wearing his pajamas. For that answer, legendary ABC sportscaster Keith Jackson provides some humorous play-by-play. If they prove they know their family inside and out - in front of all their friends and neighbors - they could win thousands of dollars and amazing prizes, including the NCL cruise to the Mexican Riviera. One of Rebecca Laut's dreams is to take her family on a cruise, and she will have the opportunity to win the cruise tonight.
NCL will be featured on future episodes of the nationally-aired family game show.
Executive producers for "Opportunity Knocks" are Ashton Kutcher, Jason Goldberg, Karey Burke, JD Roth and Todd A. Nelson.
NCL Corporation Ltd. is the holding company for various subsidiary companies involved in owning and operating the ships of Norwegian Cruise Line.
NCL is building a new third generation Freestyle Cruising project known as F3, for delivery in 2010. NCL today has the youngest fleet in the industry, providing guests the opportunity to enjoy the flexibility of Freestyle Cruising on the newest, most contemporary ships at sea, and has recently added its latest new ship, the 2,400 passenger Norwegian Gem.

The most widely heralded ship to enter the cruise market this year, Celebrity Solstice, departed Meyer Werft shipyard yesterday in Papenburg, Germany, as the largest ship ever built by the longtime shipbuilder. In a milestone event known as "The Conveyance," the 2,850-guest Celebrity Solstice made its way down the River Eems, as tens of thousands of area residents lining the river banks cheered and photographed the historic event.
"This is a very momentous occasion for Celebrity Cruises," said the brand's President and CEO Dan Hanrahan. "Celebrity Solstice is the perfect manifestation of what the Celebrity brand is all about: extraordinary service, spectacular dining, and fabulous style and design. And as the first in a series of five Solstice-class ships, it’s a vivid example of the growth and momentum of the Celebrity brand, and our commitment to meet our guests' and travel agent partners’ demands for more vacation options with Celebrity."
Among the wealth of attributes guests will find only on Celebrity Solstice are:
• The industry’s first Lawn Club, a lush, half-acre recreation area with real, growing grass.
• The industry’s first Hot Glass Show, with live glassblowing demonstrations presented in association with The Corning Museum of Glass.
• Larger staterooms, with design inspirations offered by a panel of five women, hand-picked for their unique travel and hospitality insights.
• 10 varied restaurants, ranging from the dramatic, two-level “Grand Epernay” main dining room with a sweeping wine tower, to four exquisite specialty restaurants, to several stylish, casual venues.
• An entirely new category of accommodations, “AquaClass,” designed to offer a spa vacation experience at sea rivaling the best of those on land.
• A state-of-the-art theater and stage design, with three new leading-edge shows custom-designed for Celebrity with Poet Theatricals, in their first cruise line partnership.
"There also is the intangible attribute which is consistent across the Celebrity fleet, and that's the extraordinary, anticipatory service our phenomenal staff offer our guests every day," said Hanrahan.
Celebrity Solstice will be berthed in Eemshaven, Netherlands, from September 29 to October 24, with two separate sea trials planned during that period, in addition to crew arrivals, training, provisioning and finishing work onboard. The ship will depart Eemshaven October 24 on a transatlantic voyage, with arrival in Fort Lauderdale planned for early November, followed by a series of promotional cruises for invited travel agents, press and other dignitaries. The ship will be named in formal ceremonies on November 14, and will begin its maiden season November 23, with a series of alternating 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruises roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale, calling on San Juan, St. Maarten, St. Kitts, and Tortola during this Fall and Winter. Posted by: CruiseGuy on Thursday, September 25, 2008 - 04:53 PM

|
Five Holland America Line ships will soon undergo individual month-long dry docks at a total cost of approximately $200 million. The most dramatic alterations during the latest Signature of Excellence enhancements will result in an additional 32 verandah staterooms added to the aft portion of each ship. In addition, 46 new innovative lanai staterooms will allow guests direct access to the Lower Promenade Deck and on four ships verandahs will be installed on 12 staterooms on Deck 9 forward.
On the five ships, ms Statendam, ms Maasdam, ms Ryndam, ms Veendam and ms Rotterdam, forty-six staterooms on the Lower Promenade deck will become a new lanai category stateroom with lanai doors that open directly onto the walk-around promenade. Décor in the lanai staterooms will reflect elements of nature with soothing earth-tones.
Fifteen new Spa Staterooms will be created from existing staterooms, except on the Rotterdam where 23 staterooms on Verandah deck will be transformed into spa staterooms. The rooms, so named because of their proximity to the Greenhouse Spa and Salon and special in-room spa amenities, offer their own ambiance, providing unmatched relaxation, privacy and serenity. Décor reflects the natural elements of the earth with soft earth-tone hues and light, fresh accent colors echoing nature's own. Soothing patterns adorn the bed runner and pillows and graphite-colored carpeting tie together all the elements. A counter-top water feature in each stateroom provides a natural, ambient background sound and artwork reflects serene images in nature. Exclusive spa treatments are offered only in these staterooms.
"By adding or enhancing staterooms with verandahs and lanais, we're able to better meet the guests" demand for balcony accommodations," said Richard D. Meadows, CTC, executive vice president, marketing, sales and guest programs, Holland America Line. "The latest Signature of Excellence installment enhances our premium product and the stateroom modifications update the layout and décor of the rooms while remaining elegant."
Ship capacities will change as a result of the additional staterooms. All five ships also will add a varying number of inside staterooms. Guest capacity on Rotterdam will be 1,404 and capacity on Statendam, Maasdam, Ryndam Veendam will be 1,350.
As part of this next phase of Signature of Excellence, all staterooms and their bathrooms will be enhanced. All staterooms will receive new soft goods including carpet, and desks and vanities will be resurfaced. Decorative wall sconces, drapery and accent pillows will add a touch of modern elegance to the new décor.
Outside and inside staterooms will be redecorated in rich earth hues complimented by accents of sienna and gold. New soft goods include a rich, olive-colored sofa with decorative pillows, chairs reupholstered in gold chenille, and a bed runner with a design inspired by nature.
Suites will have a contemporary color scheme with a traditional twist. A rich, dark carpet and chocolate-colored leather sofa contrast with light golden tones of soft goods and maple casework. Accent colors of reddish-orange punctuate sofa pillows, chairs and the bed runner. Sheer cream-colored draperies are light and airy with imprints of gold leaves.
This $200-million phase in the Signature of Excellence commitment brings the latest innovations at sea to Holland America Line"s Statendam, Maasdam, Ryndam, Veendam and Rotterdam. The first of the extensive dry dock periods begins with the Veendam in spring 2009 and the last will be completed on the Maasdam in late 2010. While in dry dock, ships will expand the aft deck to create a new resort pool concept, The Retreat, and create a new bar concept called Mix that features separate areas - Martinis, Champagne and Spirits & Ales. Overall, Holland America Line has committed $525 million to its Signature of Excellence program that redefines premium cruising.

Crystal Cruises Announces Founding Partnership with Conde Nast Traveler Five & Alive Fund
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Thursday, September 25, 2008 - 04:51 PM
cruise-news
|
Crystal Cruises announces that it has become a founding partner of the Condé Nast Traveler Five & Alive Fund. The announcement came during the magazine's 2008 World Savers Congress in New York City on September 23. Five & Alive, a program of Population Services International (PSI), supports children five and under in more than 30 countries around the world by preventing and treating malaria, water-borne illness, pneumonia and malnutrition. Nearly 10 million children in impoverished countries die every year of preventable illnesses before they reach the age of five because they lack the simplest of things - clean drinking water, basic medicines, mosquito netting, and nutrition.
"This partnership was directly inspired by last year's Condé Nast Traveler World Savers Congress," said Crystal Cruises President Gregg Michel. "Throughout our company's history, we have supported numerous philanthropic projects, and we had been close to creating our own global program. Rather than go it alone, this partnership presented a perfect opportunity to join forces to create something bigger. I was thoroughly impressed with the determination of Condé Nast Traveler and Kate Roberts from Five & Alive to make this world a better place through travel."
In one year, Five & Alive has raised nearly $1 million from readers and the travel industry, including efforts from Crystal Cruises. In April 2008, Michel, along with Crystal Serenity Cruise Director Gary Hunter, joined Condé Nast Traveler editor-in-chief Klara Glowczewska, Kate Roberts, and actress Ashley Judd on a trip to Rwanda where the Crystal team was further enlightened and inspired by the challenges and opportunities facing Five & Alive.
With its new commitment to the cause, Crystal Cruises will introduce initiatives to raise money and engage its guests and employees. Slated for later this year is the on-board sales of specially designed polo shirts for adults and Webkinz "pets" for children with proceeds benefiting Five & Alive. As part of its ongoing effort, in its high end jewelry shops, the luxury line is also planning to introduce a "fundraising" bracelet.
"We are delighted that Crystal Cruises has joined as a founding partner of the Condé Nast Traveler Five & Alive Fund," said Condé Nast Traveler Editor-in-Chief Klara Glowczewska. "We hope this generous act will inspire others to join us as the Five & Alive Fund seeks to raise money to save the lives of children under five around the globe."
"Five & Alive is thrilled to be partnering with Crystal Cruises on this important program," said Five & Alive Director Kate Roberts. "The Condé Nast Traveler Five & Alive Fund was created to engage hospitality leaders such as Crystal Cruises in the fight to prevent childhood disease and we applaud Crystal for their leadership and commitment."

The Boston Symphony Chamber Players, one of the world's most distinguished chamber music ensembles, presented three Cunard Command Performances aboard Queen Mary 2's September 4 Transatlantic Crossing, filling the ship's Royal Court Theater with classical music fans to hear highlights from Mozart, Bach, Brahms, Saint-Saëns, Poulenc and Fauré. In addition, the Boston Symphony Orchestra's esteemed Artistic Administrator, Anthony Fogg, presented two engaging enrichment programmes for Cunard Insights entitled The Boston Symphony Orchestra - A Philanthropist's Vision and The Classical Musician in the 21st Century.
"We are delighted by the superb response from our guests to the Cunard Command Performances and programmes by the world-class BSO Chamber Players," said Carol Marlow, president of Cunard Line. "Our guests were also afforded an intriguing 'insider's view' into the history and workings of a world-class chamber ensemble."
"It was a great honor for the members of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players to perform aboard the recent Atlantic crossing on Queen Mary 2," said Anthony Fogg, Artistic Administrator of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. "The audiences were warm and enthusiastic and the atmosphere for the musicians encouraged music-making of the highest level. It was a spirited collaboration for all of us who participated."
The trio of programmes included an All Mozart performance featuring Quartet in F for oboe and strings, Duo in B-flat for bassoon and cello, and Quartet in G minor for piano and strings, and an All French programme featuring Saint-Saëns Sonata in G for bassoon and piano, Poulenc Trio for oboe, bassoon, and piano, and Fauré Quartet No. 1 in C minor for piano and strings. The final programme showcased Bach & Brahms, highlighting J.S. Bach's Trio Sonata in G for violin, oboe, and bassoon and Brahms' Quartet No. 1 in G minor for piano and strings.
"The Boston Symphony Chamber Players' dynamic performances were the highlight of the voyage, reflecting that this type of programming is most appealing to our guests. The BSO's three concerts received standing ovations with multiple encores and was the pinnacle of an outstanding overall entertainment experience," said Queen Mary 2's Entertainment Director Ray Rouse.
The Boston Symphony Chamber Players were founded in 1964 to ensure the BSO could share the unique qualities of the full chamber repertoire with concert-goers. Cunard Line is in its second season as sponsor of the Boston Pops at Tanglewood Series and the Tanglewood Jazz Festival.

Holland America Nieuw Amsterdam Ship Named
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Monday, September 22, 2008 - 05:26 PM
cruise-news
|
To be delivered in 2010, the 86,000-ton Nieuw Amsterdam will be built at Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri's Marghera shipyard and its interior design and art collection will reflect the glamour and history of New York City, formerly called Nieuw Amsterdam.
"The Signature Class marks Holland America Line's latest series of new-build vessels and with a guest capacity of 2,106 for Nieuw Amsterdam, it reaffirms our commitment to the mid-sized cruise ship market," said Stein Kruse, president and CEO, Holland America Line. "This name has a rich heritage in our company with this ship being our fourth in 135 years. We are proud to extend this illustrious ship name to our current fleet."
The first Nieuw Amsterdam was launched in 1906 and used both a full set of sails and steam engines. She was 17,149 tons and carried 2,886 passengers, 2,200 of them in third class. She sailed in regular service through World War I and then through to 1932.
The famed Nieuw Amsterdam II joined the fleet in 1938 as the company's flagship. The silhouette of this ship can still be seen today behind Henry Hudson's Half Moon in the company's logo. At 36,287 tons, "the Darling of the Dutch," as she was known, was decorated in great style and was launched by Her Majesty Queen Wilhemina of the Netherlands. Nieuw Amsterdam II served proudly in World War II completing 44 war time voyages carrying nearly 400,000 passengers (mostly troops). Following the war, she was rebuilt and, as the queen of Holland America Line's "spotless fleet," hosted countless well-known figures among her guests, including Katherine Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, Spencer Tracey and Albert Schweitzer.
Nieuw Amsterdam III was launched in 1983 as one of the most elegant ships of her time. At 33,900 tons, Nieuw Amsterdam III sailed in Alaska in the summers and in the Caribbean in the winters.
"With innovative design and guest offerings, Nieuw Amsterdam IV will continue the proud tradition of her name and continue to evolve of Holland America Line's sophisticated mid-sized ships and further our premium leadership position," said Kruse.
Previous new-build series include the four-ship Statendam Class group, four-ship Rotterdam Class and four-ship Vista Class. The line also owns and operates the 793-passenger Elegant Explorer, ms Prinsendam. The first Signature Class vessel, ms Eurodam, joined the fleet in July 2008.
Eurodam, and now Nieuw Amsterdam, further define and expand the Holland America Line premium brand with new concepts such as the innovative pan-Asian Tamarind restaurant and Silk Den lounge surrounded by panoramic views overlooking the ocean expanse and the Lido pool. Other additions are an Explorer's Lounge Bar, a premium wine-tasting lounge, an elegant luxury jewelry boutique, new atrium bar area, enhanced and reconfigured show lounge, and a new photographic and imaging center.
Nieuw Amsterdam will feature 11 guest decks and staterooms will spotlight all the Signature of Excellence premium amenities of plush Euro-top Mariner's Dream Beds, deluxe waffle/terry cloth robes, Egyptian cotton towels, flat panel TVs, dvd players, make-up mirrors with halo lighting, massage shower heads, professional grade hair dryers, fresh flowers and complimentary fruit baskets. The ship will also feature innovative spa staterooms with additional spa amenities.
The ship will continue several much-admired Holland America Line features, including outside-view, glass elevators at midship; the Explorations Cafe -- a cyber-coffee house powered by The New York Times; the Pinnacle Grill and Pinnacle Bar; the innovative Culinary Arts Center presented by Food & Wine Magazine, where culinary experts provide cooking demonstrations and intimate classes in a state-of-the-art onboard show kitchens; an expanded Greenhouse Spa and Salon with thermal suites and hydro-pool, the largest gymnasium ever built for Holland America Line; and a youth facility that includes the teens-only Loft. In addition the ship will feature the family-style Canaletto's Italian restaurant.
On the technical side, Signature Class ships will feature the latest state-of-the-art navigation and safety systems including dynamic positioning abilities to hold the ship in a precise position. The vessels will be powered by six diesel generators and propelled by the latest Azipod propulsion technology.
"This new class of ships demonstrates the strength of our brand, the loyalty of our guests and the dedication of our more than 16,000 employees worldwide," said Kruse. "The added capacity will provide greater opportunities for our guests and employees alike."

Celebrity Cruises today announced new itineraries for Celebrity Millennium and Celebrity Mercury, presenting guests with new cruise vacation options from the historic coastal cities of Baltimore, Maryland, and Charleston, South Carolina, along with the brand’s popular Caribbean cruises from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Correspondingly, the line announced plans to discontinue its Australia and New Zealand cruises previously scheduled for late-2009 and 2010 on Celebrity Millennium.
"Australia and New Zealand are charming and beautiful destinations, and we're confident we'll return again as our brand and fleet grows," said Celebrity's President & CEO Dan Hanrahan. "Currently, though, our travel agent partners and guests have repeatedly said they want more options to sail with Celebrity from the Eastern seaboard, where our brand was founded, and still has a very large and loyal base of cruisers. So, we’re pleased to present some very attractive new cruise vacations from that region."
Celebrity Millennium Takes on Celebrity Mercury's Territory:
The 2,038-guest Celebrity Millennium will cap its 2009 season in Alaska with cruises previously scheduled for the 1,898-guest Celebrity Mercury, offering more capacity on the popular sailings. The itineraries will reflect those previously announced for Celebrity Mercury, with the addition of a 12-night wine-themed cruise departing from Vancouver on September 28, 2009, followed by an eastbound, 16-night Panama Canal cruise on October 10, 2009, from San Diego to San Juan, where Celebrity Millennium will offer a series of 10- and 11-night Southern Caribbean cruises roundtrip from San Juan, beginning October 26, 2009. Ports of call on the Southern Caribbean itineraries include Tortola, St. Maarten, St. Lucia, Barbados, Grenada, Curacao, Aruba, St. Croix, St. Kitts and Dominica, with slight variations between the 10- and 11-night sailings.
Guests with reservations on the sailings previously scheduled for Celebrity Mercury will be contacted and re-accommodated on the same sailing dates on Celebrity Millennium, at the rates paid.
Celebrity Mercury Offers New Options on the Eastern Seaboard Celebrity Mercury will sail a 17-night Panama Canal cruise from San Diego on October 23, 2009, ending in Baltimore. There, from November 2009 to February 2010, the ship will present a series of new 12-night Eastern Caribbean cruises visiting St. Thomas; St. Kitts; Antigua; St. Maarten, and Tortola, as well as four 9-night cruises visiting Charleston; Key West, Fla., and Cococay and Nassau, Bahamas.
Celebrity Mercury then will present a series of 10- and 11-night Eastern and Western Caribbean voyages from Charleston from February through April 2010, with visits to St. Thomas, St. Maarten, St. Kitts and Tortola on the eastern series, and Key West; Costa Maya, Mexico; Belize City, Belize; Cozumel, Mexico, and Nassau on the western lineup.
The new itineraries on Celebrity Mercury replace the Southern Caribbean cruises from San Juan previously scheduled from November 2009 to April 2010. Guests with affected bookings will be contacted and offered the option to be reaccommodated in like accommodations on identical Southern Caribbean itineraries on Celebrity Millennium at the rate paid.
Guests holding either individual or group reservations on Celebrity Millennium's previously scheduled Australia and New Zealand cruises between October 9, 2009 and March 22, 2010, will be offered the option to either re-book on Celebrity Millennium's Australia and New Zealand cruises between October 17, 2008 and April 12, 2009, subject to availability, at the prevailing rate, and will receive a $600 per-stateroom or $800 per-suite onboard credit. Alternatively, these guests may re-book Celebrity Millennium's new Panama Canal or Southern Caribbean sailings between October 10, 2009 and April 16, 2010, and receive a $200 per stateroom and $400 per suite onboard credit.

As Queen Mary 2 prepares to sail her 100th Transatlantic Crossing, Cunard Line reveals the captivating statistics that illustrate the Line's singular hold on the bygone glamour that defines their Transatlantic travel experience. The only company offering regularly scheduled Transatlantic service via flagship Queen Mary 2, Cunard Line continues a tradition that began 168 years ago. The iconic ocean liner will depart on her 100th Transatlantic voyage on September 21 from Southampton, England arriving in New York on September 27. On arrival, she will have logged 711,288 nautical miles since her debut with 316,729 of those nautical miles on Transatlantic voyages alone.
"Perhaps more than any other voyage, a Transatlantic Crossing captures the imagination of the most intrepid travelers," said Carol Marlow, president of Cunard Line. "A Transatlantic voyage recalls a bygone era of glamour and sophistication. For many, it is on par with the world's most storied travel experiences."
Queen Mary 2's regularly scheduled Transatlantic service forms the cornerstone of her annual itineraries, which also includes her second World Cruise in 2009 and forays into the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Norway.
Since the ship entered service in 2004, Queen Mary 2 has made dozens of maiden calls around the world, including San Francisco - where thousands lined the shores of the City by the Bay to witness her sail beneath the Golden Gate Bridge and her overnight visit caused gridlock traffic on the Embarcadero; along with great port cities such as Boston and Ft. Lauderdale. She has provided a glamorous backdrop for a myriad of high-profile events, including The Britannia Ball (a charity gala benefitting the New York City Opera and Brooklyn Academy of Music) in 2007; the PBS TV Concert Special: Carly Simon: A Moonlight Serenade on the Queen Mary 2; an onboard event honouring George Lucas at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival; as well as several Cunard Royal Rendezvous events in New York, Ft. Lauderdale, Long Beach, California and Sydney, Australia with her sister ships, QE2 and Queen Victoria. Queen Mary 2 even played a role in literary history, transporting the first author-signed copy of the highly anticipated Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to its U.S. debut.
In addition to logging nearly three-quarters of a million miles, Queen Mary 2 will mark other milestones on her 100th Transatlantic voyage, including:
* More than 229,000 guests crossing the North Atlantic
* 450 pets crossing the North Atlantic
* 97,000 pounds of lobster served
* 2,700 pounds of caviar served
* 206,200 bottles of Champagne served
* Enough tea to fill nearly five Olympic-sized swimming pools
Queen Mary 2 has welcomed many notable guests, including Barbara Walters, Katie Couric, Uma Thurman, John Cleese, Richard Dreyfuss, Carly Simon, Rod Stewart, Tina Brown and Harold Evans, Terrance Howard, Donald Trump, and Dame Shirley Bassey. Her eminent visitors have included HRH Queen Elizabeth II, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Noor, Former President George Bush, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Senator Hillary Clinton.
In 2009, Queen Mary 2 marks her fifth year of service with an extended Transatlantic season of 6-, 8- and 9-day Crossings. In total, she will sail 25 Transatlantic Crossings, including classic six-day voyages between Southampton and New York, two eight-day voyages between Hamburg and New York, one eight-day voyage from Boston via New York to Southampton and one nine-day Crossing from Southampton via New York to Halifax and Boston.

Star Cruises, the Leading Cruise Line in Asia-Pacific, announces the winter season itinerary to see the third phase of the seasonal redeployment plan of the Asian fleet.
SuperStar Virgo, the largest cruise ship in Asia, currently homeports in Hong Kong, will return to Singapore and offer enchanting Straits of Malacca and Andaman Sea cruises from 24 October 2008 onwards. The long-awaited 2-night Redang cruise will be re-launched from April to September next year.
SuperStar Aquarius will leave Singapore for Hong Kong on 24 October 2008 to start her winter cruise season comprising of 4-night Hainan Island / Vietnam cruises and 1-night getaway cruise in South China Sea. Apart from the popular 4-night Sanya / Halong Bay cruises, the ship will also call on Danang, the fourth largest city in Vietnam with beautiful long beaches and fascinating cultural & historical sights.
SuperStar Libra, offering Taiwan and Japan cruises in the current summer season, will also see her first deployment to Port Klang and Singapore from 8 November 2008. Cruisers can enjoy easy and convenient embarkation and disembarkation in Port Klang for the 3-night Penang and Singapore or Langkawi and Singapore or 4-night Phuket and Singapore cruises.
To bring greater variety and broaden the appeal and experience of cruising to our guests in the region, Star Cruises has commenced a series of strategic fleet deployment that will see its vessels call at different ports and destinations. Since last June, the successful deployment of SuperStar Virgo, SuperStar Aquarius and SuperStar Libra were well received by cruise vacationers from Asia as well as from Australia, New Zealand and Europe.
Mr. William Ng, Executive Director of Star Cruises said, “The different phases of fleet redeployment enable our guests to enjoy a greater variety of cruising experience. The 7.1% growth in group’s revenue for first half year of 2008 when compared to last year
has proven the success. What excites us more is that the redeployment has not only stimulated the demand of FIT cruisers and repeat business, but also boosted the sales of incentive groups in the region. In June this year, over 2,000 Indian visitors including a group of 1,000 yogis and an incentive group of over 1,000 top achievers flew in to join SuperStar Virgo to cruise from Hong Kong. We are also expecting another group of 4,000 from Beijing for a 3-night cruise on SuperStar Virgo in October which will be the largest incentive group we have ever received.”
